Combining his many certifications and decades of medical experience, Dr. James Lu uniquely understands the human body and its capacity to heal. He has over 25 years of medical expertise in acupuncture and physical therapy, and is regularly requested to conduct international lectures. He was also National Champion in Chen Taichi for 5 consecutive years in China and the United States.

Dr. Lu has a doctoral degree in Physical Therapy from the University of St. Augustine and a Master’s of Science from the American College of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. He is also fully certified by the Board of Physical Therapy Specialty as an Orthopedic Specialist and received advanced training in Manual Therapy from the University of St. Augustine.

Throughout his studies and experience, Dr. Lu discovered that combining acupuncture with rehabilitation leads to maximum recovery potential with minimal pain. His work resulted in the first outpatient acupuncture program in the Hospital Corporation of America (HCA), where he extended his services to pre- and post-operative care for patients who have undergone cardiac and thoracic surgeries. He also ran a second clinic at Bayshore Acute Rehabilitation to facilitate the recovery of stroke, surgery, orthopedic injuries, and cancer support.

In addition to his clinics, Dr. Lu provides integrative acupuncture and rehabilitation to the inpatient rehabilitation unit of Good Samaritan Hospital, Mission Oak Campus in Los Gatos, CA. Dr. Lu’s primary experience is in integrative orthopedics, stroke rehabilitation, and pain management. He also has extensive experience in treating gastrointestinal, neurological, gynecological, and allergic disorders.

Phoenix Lu

OFFICE MANAGER

Phoenix Lu is passionate about helping patients feel at home and giving them the confidence they need throughout the recovery process. Phoenix studied performing arts at the National Taiwan University of Arts. Before coming to America, Phoenix worked in the TV commercial and magazine industry in Taiwan for several years. Once in America, she built up a successful international e-commerce business selling beauty products. Regardless of the industry, Phoenix knows how to run a tight ship. When Phoenix is not working, she enjoys experimenting with new cooking methods and healthy recipes. Phoenix is always looking for ways to live a healthier and happier life.

David Cansino

Certified Personal Trainer | Corrective Exercise Specialist

David Cansino earned his Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology from California State University, East Bay. David has worked in various settings focused on movement and quality of life improvement, from personal training to helping stroke patients become more physically active. His experiences combined with the variety of sports played throughout his life has invigorated his passion for movement and recovery. During his free time, David enjoys lifting weights,  experimenting with different movements in the gym, skateboarding, and jiu-jitsu.

Austin Phillips

Rehab ASSISTANT

Austin Phillips earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Exercise Physiology, minoring in Health & Wellness at California State University, Chico. Growing up, Austin spent many hours on the baseball field. Naturally, he had his fair share of injuries and went through much rehabilitation and sport-specific strength training. Austin previously worked as the assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach for the Chico State softball team and the catching and offensive coach for the NorCal Mavericks, designing and developing training programs at both jobs. After graduation, Austin moved back to San Jose and worked in multiple outpatient clinics around the South Bay, primarily focusing on outpatient orthopedic rehab and sports medicine. During his free time, Austin enjoys playing his guitar, camping, hiking, and spending quality time with his family and friends.

Son Duong

INTERN ACUPUNCTURIST

Son Duong graduated from California State University of Monterey Bay in 2012 with a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology, recently obtaining a Doctoral degree in Traditional Chinese Medicine from Five Branches University. He has past experience working as a physical therapy aide in a sport and orthopedic clinic setting for three years, as well as volunteering for the Multiple Sclerosis Society and Muscular Dystrophy Association. Son enjoys being creative in his work, using his knowledge from acupuncture school and past PT experiences to treat and improve patient health. During his free time, he enjoys painting, dancing, writing poetry, learning the guitar, and Olympic weight lifting.

Kendra Hawken

Rehab & administrative assistant

Kendra Hawken earned her Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology, at Fresno Pacific University, with an emphasis in Pre-Physical Therapy & Occupational Therapy. Kendra has been interested in Physical and Occupational Therapy since she was a kid, and her passion grew through her years as a collegiate athlete and her desire to help other athletes get back to the field of competition. She has a background working with dementia, parkinson’s, schizophrenia, and other mental illnesses within hospital and clinical settings. Kendra’s goal is to earn a Doctorate degree in Physical Therapy and strives to create an atmosphere for her patients to grow and work towards their happiest lives. During her free time, Kendra enjoys working out, going to the beach, hiking, and expressing her creative side through painting.

Chelsea Escher

Rehab Assistant

Certified Personal Trainer

Chelsea Escher earned her Bachelor of Science in Dance & Performance Studies from Roger Williams University in Rhode Island, where she also double majored in Public Relations. She spent the last 10 years dancing professionally in NYC while working as a Personal Trainer and Group Fitness Instructor. Chelsea is a NASM Certified Personal Trainer, Birth Doula, and Pre/Postnatal Corrective Exercise Specialist, holding additional certifications in Pilates Mat, TRX, and Barre. Her specialties include functional movement, strength training, and injury prevention, with a niche focus on Pelvic and Women’s health. After experiencing many injuries throughout her career, Chelsea knows firsthand how effective integrative rehabilitation methods can be. Her curiosity about the human body, plus her love of learning, movement, and helping people makes physical therapy the perfect career for her. Chelsea is currently pursuing her Physical Therapist Assistant degree at Ohlone College. She enjoys spending her free time traveling, exploring the outdoors with her fiancé and dog, arranging flowers, pilates, dancing, and seeing live music.

Lisa Lam

Rehab Assistant

Lisa earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Neuroscience from Pomona College with a minor in music. She recently moved back to the area from Austin, TX where she was a performing violinist, music instructor, and chiropractic assistant, and also has years of experience working in a variety of medical settings. In Austin, she completed an introductory series in coursework to Traditional Chinese Medicine, and she is currently completing a program in massage therapy. She has always been fascinated by how the human body works and was interested in medicine from a young age. Over time, this developed into an enthusiastic focus on holistic and integrative approaches to healthcare. Her passion for helping others achieve health and balance in their lives drives her to continue learning about the treatment modalities and techniques, techniques which allow her patients overcome their health challenges and achieve their rehabilitative goals. When not at the clinic, Lisa enjoys playing music, cooking, spending time outdoors and going on hikes. 

Aaron Cha

Rehab Assistant

Certified Personal Trainer | Corrective Exercise Specialist

Aaron Cha earned his Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology from San Jose State University. For the last 5 years, Aaron gained a new interest in powerlifting, eager to learn about strength and self-improvement. Throughout his powerlifting career he received many injuries, inspiring him to further learn about functional movement and injury prevention. His curiosity about the human body helped him obtain a more sustainable lifestyle towards his passion for powerlifting, and now Aaron shares his knowledge to help others overcome their injuries. Aaron is a personal trainer certified by the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) with 2 years of experience training youth athletes in strength, conditioning, and injury prevention. He is currently working towards his Fitness Nutrition Specialist and Corrective Exercise Specialist certifications in order to better help others achieve their goals. During his free time, he enjoys going to the gym, playing basketball, and going on foodie tours with his friends.

Alyssa Trompeter

Allyssa Trompeter attended California Lutheran University where she earned her degree in Exercise Science with an emphasis in Health Professions. Growing up, Allyssa spent the majority of her time in the dance studio and on stage. These experiences led her to an interest in physical therapy. Allyssa is starting her physical therapy career here with us at Hope Neuro-Acupuncture Rehab and she has enjoyed growing relationships with all of the patients that come in. Allyssa’s favorite thing about working here is being able to see people leave feeling better and with a smile on their face. Allyssa plans to further her education by going back to school to get her Physical Therapy Assistant degree. Allyssa’s hobbies include spending time with loved ones, biking, and finding new projects to crochet.
