Dr. James. C. Lu is a doctor with a unique understanding of the human body and its capacity to heal. His in-depth experience is recognized both professionally and personally. He has over 25 years of medical expertise in acupuncture and physical therapy and regularly conducts international lecturers on their benefits. He was also National Champion in Chen Taichi for 5 consecutive years in China and in the USA.

Dr. Lu is licensed in both Acupuncture and Physical Therapy. He holds a doctoral degree in Physical Therapy from the University of St. Augustine and a Master’s of Science from the American College of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. He is also fully certified by the Board of Physical Therapy Specialty as an Orthopedic Specialist and received advanced training in Manual Therapy from the University of St. Augustine.

Throughout his studies and experience, Dr. Lu found that combining acupuncture with rehabilitation leads to maximum recovery potential with minimal pain. His work resulted in the first outpatient acupuncture program in the Hospital Corporation of America (HCA), where he extends his services to pre- and post-operative care for patients who have undergone cardiac and thoracic surgeries. He also runs a second clinic at Bayshore Acute Rehabilitation to facilitate the recovery of stroke, surgery, orthopedic injuries, and cancer support.

In addition to his clinics, Dr. Lu provides integrative acupuncture and physical therapy in the inpatient rehabilitation unit of Good Samaritan Hospital, Mission Oak Campus in Los Gatos, CA. Dr. Lu’s primary experience is in integrative orthopedics, stroke rehabilitation, and pain management. He also has extensive experience in treating gastrointestinal, neurological, gynecological, and allergic disorders.

Phoenix Lu


Phoenix Lu studied performing arts at the National Taiwan University of Arts. Before coming to America, Phoenix worked in the TV commercial and magazine industry in Taiwan for several years. Once in America, she built up a successful international e-commerce business selling beauty products. Phoenix is passionate about helping patients feel at home and giving them the confidence they need throughout the recovery process. When Phoenix is not working, she enjoys experimenting with new cooking methods and healthy recipes. Phoenix is always looking for ways to live a healthier and happier life.

David Cansino

LEAD Rehab Assistant

David Cansino earned his Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology from California State University, East Bay. David has worked in various settings focused on movement and quality of life improvement, from personal training to helping stroke patients become more physically active. His experiences from working in those settings and playing a variety of sports throughout his life has made him passionate about movement and recovery. He loves to help others improve their quality of life through movement and rehabilitation. During his free time, David enjoys exercising and experimenting with different movements in the gym. He also enjoys skateboarding and jiu-jitsu.

Adam Buttrey

Rehab Assistant

Adam Buttrey earned a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology from the University of North Carolina,
Wilmington. He was interested in physical therapy at a young age and has shadowed & interned in
multiple settings ranging from hospitals to private clinics allowing him to work with a broad range of
patients. His goal is to earn a doctorate in physical therapy and eventually open a clinic to help people
recover from injuries, which is what therapy did for him. Adam wants to build on his physical therapy
skills while maintaining a positive and safe environment inside HOPE Neuro-Acupuncture Rehab. He
demonstrates patience and genuinely cares about each person reaching their rehabilitative goals. In his free time, he enjoys working out and going over the hill into Santa Cruz to surf.

Kendra Hawken

Rehab & administrative assistant

Kendra Hawken earned her Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology, at Fresno Pacific University, with an emphasis in Pre-Physical Therapy & Occupational Therapy. Kendra has has been interested in Physical and Occupational Therapy since she was younger and her passion grew through her years as a collegiate athlete and wanting to help athletes like her get back to the field of competition. She has a background working in dementia, parkinson’s, schizophrenia, and other mental illnesses within hospital and clinical settings. Kendra’s goal is to earn a Doctorate degree in Physical Therapy and strives to create an atmosphere for her patients to grow and work towards living their happiest lives. During her free time, Kendra enjoys working out, going to the beach, and hiking, as well as using her creative side in her love for painting.

About our Team

Son Duong


Son Duong graduated from California State University of Monterey Bay in 2012 with a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology and has recently obtained a Doctoral degree in Traditional Chinese Medicine from Five Branches University. He has past experience working as a physical therapy aide in a sport and orthopedic clinic setting for three years as well as volunteering for the Multiple Sclerosis Society and Muscular Dystrophy Association. Son enjoys being creative in his work and using what he learned from acupuncture school and his past PT experiences to treat and improve patient health and longevity. During his free time, he enjoys painting, dancing, writing poetry, learning the guitar, and Olympic weight lifting.


Austin Phillips


Austin Phillips earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Exercise Physiology with a minor in Health & Wellness from California State University, Chico. Austin spent many hours on the baseball field growing up, and naturally had his fair share of injuries, going through much rehabilitation and sport specific strength training. Austin previously worked as the assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach for the Chico State softball team and the catching and offensive coach for the NorCal Mavericks, designing and developing training programs at both jobs. After graduation, Austin moved back to San Jose and worked in multiple outpatient clinics around the South Bay, primarily focusing on outpatient orthopedic rehab and sports medicine. When not at the clinic, Austin enjoys playing his guitar, camping, hiking, and spending quality time with his family and friends.
